Art Deco apartment building erected for Mrs Van den Berghe and her children to a 1936 design by the architect Edward Van Not; completed in the autumn of 1937, it contains twelve flats of a uniform type and a caretaker's flat. The "Résidence Scaldis" belongs to the late work of Van Not, who, according to the inventory, turned early on, from the beginning of the 1920s, to the emerging Art Deco style before moving towards a moderate modernism in the 1930s. On a reinforced-concrete frame, the three-bay building has a basement and six storeys under a flat roof; the façade, faced with white stone, with bluestone for the high plinth, porch and sills, is symmetrical. The upper storeys, cantilevered over four levels with continuous windows, are accentuated on the axis by a profiled Art Deco pilaster with a stepped top, and the top floor forms a set-back attic with a terrace. The central porch bears the inscription Résidence "Scaldis" and keeps its wrought-iron door by the V. Vingerhoet workshop of Antwerp; the building is recorded in the Flemish architectural heritage inventory.
