Edward Van Not

Edward Van Not, born in Borgerhout in 1877 and died in Antwerp on 7 May 1957, the son of the Borgerhout contractor Constant Van Not, was active as an architect from the early 1900s. Until his death he combined a private practice with the post of municipal architect of Deurne. Before the First World War his many houses alternated between revival styles, the Beaux-Arts style, Art Nouveau and the cottage style, as in the neo-Gothic house 'Sint-Jozef' (1901-1902) at Cogels-Osylei 68 in Berchem. From the early 1920s he took up the emerging Art Deco style at an early stage. Between 1922 and 1927, on his own account and for four different clients, he designed a group of Art Deco buildings around Plantin en Moretuslei and Van den Nestlei, among the first high-rise luxury apartment buildings in Antwerp: the three Cassiers buildings (1922-1923), the Van der Avoort building at Plantin en Moretuslei 90 (1923), the Hoskens building and the Cassiers building at Van den Nestlei 17 (1925). He also designed the Neetesonne-Dens house at Cuperusstraat 29 (1924), the Vercammen house at Van Hersbekelei 11 (1927) and the Spiessens house at Venneborglaan 9 (1931). In the 1930s his architecture moved towards a moderate modernism.
