Ghent
Ghent — Land van Waaslaan, from the Vooruit apartment building to Victor Braeckmanlaan
In Ghent, this short route goes up Land van Waaslaan towards Sint-Amandsberg, past Art Deco façades built between 1926 and 1933. It starts at the apartment building designed in 1928 by Paul De Taeye for the socialist cooperative Vooruit, then passes the Louis Balliu house (1928), with stained-glass fanlights, and Jean Hebbelynck’s house (1929), with a chequered tile frieze. Here Henri Vaerwyck-Suys signed, for Karel Bekaert-Van Loo, the symmetrical group of five apartment buildings at nos. 111-131 (1927-1928) and the large house at no. 149 (1929), for the milkman Hippoliet Annaert the eight-flat building at nos. 96-108 (1928) and, with his son Raymond, the house of the notary Viaene (1933). In between come houses by W. Vormezeele (1926), by the Liège architect Léon Herben (1929), with a frieze of turquoise glazed bricks, and by Ernest Snoeck (1930). The route ends at a 1927 house whose file names no architect and, on Victor Braeckmanlaan, at Herman Lefevre’s house (1932), with its monumental staircase window.
