Uniform ensemble of five apartment buildings designed in 1927 in a functional Art Deco style ("zakelijke art-decostijl") by the architect Henri Vaerwyck-Suys, who lived in the adjoining Schoolstraat, for Karel Bekaert-Van Loo; the land registry records it in 1928. The composition is symmetrical: the four outer buildings mirror one another on either side of a central building with a façade of its own, all of the same width and of four storeys under flat roofs, with ground floors partly intended as shops. The brick cornice façades on a blue stone plinth make use of decorative brickwork and cemented surfaces; the partly rendered top storey is vertical in emphasis, with openings set in recessed panels or between projecting piers, breastwork with decorative brick infill, a moulded string course and an attic with pedestals. The plans provided for a mansard roof on the second and fourth buildings, which was not executed; most of the joinery has been renewed. The ensemble is recorded in the Flemish architectural heritage inventory.
