Brabant flamand
Flemish Brabant — around Brussels, from Affligem to Halle
This route skirts Brussels through the municipalities of Flemish Brabant, from 1922 to 1946. In Affligem, the Ten Berg villa (1930), in a simple Art Deco, was built by the schoolteacher Hypolitte De Cort; in Merchtem, two town houses by Jean De Roy, one attributed (1936), the other signed (1935). In Wemmel, Adrien Blomme’s club-house for the Cercle Sportif Saint-Michel (1934), designed like a ship at anchor, and in Kraainem Willy Minnigh’s villa for Colonel Serckx (1938), both in the ocean-liner style, are protected monuments. In Sint-Genesius-Rode, the villa of Doctor Jean Konings (1922), an early work by Louis-Herman De Koninck, precedes a house and a café-restaurant by Jan Albert (1937), in a late Art Deco with ocean-liner elements. Next come Henry Lacoste’s Lasserre funerary monument in Dworp (1946), then in Beersel two town houses of 1937 and 1936; the route ends in Halle at the Church of Saint Roch (1925-1928) by Smolderen, Van Beurden and Van Hoenacker.
