Art Deco apartment building at the junction of Boomsesteenweg and VIIde-Olympiadelaan, designed in 1928 by the architect Ferdinand Van Mierlo and built in 1929 for Georges Sterckx, Henri Verpoorten and Pierre D'Hondt; as co-owner, Verpoorten was also the contractor for the works. This corner complex of three units contains a café and two shops on the ground floor and, originally, 24 modest rented dwellings. According to the inventory, Van Mierlo developed a personal Art Deco style around 1925, recognisable by the profiling of the stone elements. On a reinforced-concrete frame, the façade of four by seven bays and five storeys under a flat roof combines white stone, red brick for the piers and stone for the plinth; strongly horizontal, it is also punctuated by projections and stacked three-sided bay windows, with the slightly taller polygonal corner ending in a cubic top. Scale-patterned mouldings and friezes with a repetitive Art Deco pattern or fluting adorn the parapets, lintels and cornices; the joinery has been renewed, and the building is recorded in the Flemish architectural heritage inventory.
