Henri Vaerwyck-Suys

Henri Vaerwyck-Suys, born in Ghent on 1 May 1880 and died in Sint-Amandsberg on 25 August 1962, was a Ghent architect. A nephew of the architect Henri Vaerwyck, who died in 1919, and a cousin of Valentin Vaerwyck, he signed his work Vaerwyck-Suys, and after his uncle's death also Henri Vaerwyck. His work was mainly religious architecture, building and restoring churches: in 1931 he drew up the plans for the Church of Saint Maurus in Beke, completed in 1933, and the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Doornzele was built under his direction from 1952. He also worked with his son Raymond Vaerwyck. Living in Schoolstraat in Sint-Amandsberg, he built along the nearby Land van Waaslaan houses (1924, 1929), a group of five apartment buildings and an apartment building (1928), and then, with his son, the house of the notary Viaene (1933).
