Art Deco Ostend — from the Thermae Palace to Graaf de Smet de Naeyerlaan

In Ostend, this route starts at the Thermae Palace, inaugurated in 1933, with a neoclassical exterior and an Art Deco interior of which the hall is the main survivor, then takes in the Suomi house on Prinsenlaan (1932), the Sole Mio house, whose façade was given an Art Deco facing in 1928, and André-Louis Daniëls’s Hôtel Beau Séjour (1928). It then passes Léopold Corneau’s two mirror-image houses on Van Iseghemlaan (1933), the corner building by Charles Pil and Henri Carbon on Kapellestraat (1924-1925), which retains an Otis lift of 1925, and a corner commercial building on Christinastraat, given an Art Deco facing in 1930. It ends on Graaf de Smet de Naeyerlaan, whose interwar ensemble has been protected since 2005: Corneau’s Villa Mon Rêve (1928), the Villa Marie (1935), A. Devreese’s Villa Hetty-Ulysse (1934) and Auguste Vereecke’s ‘Compas’ building (1930), then, on Vaartstraat, the Nos Gosses house (1930).
