Antwerp
Antwerp — the Exhibition district (Tentoonstellingswijk)
Around the Vlaamsekunstlaan and the Camille Huysmanslaan, this route crosses the Exhibition district (Tentoonstellingswijk), almost exclusively modernist according to the inventory record of the Verkest-Hertogs villa. The Jahr house by Hendrik Delvaux and the Masso house by François Dens (1927-1928), which predate the district, and this villa by Jan De Braey (1935) open the walk. Then come Eduard De Winter’s Mahieu house (1933), with its almost fully preserved interior, Karel E. Mattheussen’s Gijselings building (1935), Fernand Pelgrims’s Van Dieren house (1933), one of the first private buildings in the district, Florent Vaes’s Vaes house (1933) and two works by Joan Coninck Westenberg, of 1939 and 1935. The route ends with the Résidence Espéria by the engineer-architect Jacques Maccario (1935-1936), the second building erected in the zone reserved for tall buildings in the district, the neighbouring building he designed in 1936 on the Beschavingstraat, and the three houses Vincent Cols and Jules De Roeck designed there in 1932, one of them for themselves.
