Villa in a wooded garden on the corner of Vlaamsekunstlaan and Alfred Coolsstraat, in a moderate, strictly designed Art Deco style, built for the coal merchant Fern. Verkest-Hertogs to a 1935 design by the architect Jan De Braey; it is one of the few detached houses under a traditional slate roof in the almost exclusively modernist Exhibition district. Designed as a three-façade house, it became detached around 1942 when the widow Verkest bought the adjoining plots to enlarge the garden. Of two storeys under a slate hipped roof, it has a brick facing with Dudok joints, now painted, on a blue-stone base; continuous string courses and a blind frieze under the projecting roof draw the horizontal, balanced by the window mullions and the chimney stacks. The entrance façade highlights a round-arched porch with a glass canopy, whose black-lacquered door with semicircular fanlight survives. The villa is recorded in the Flemish architectural heritage inventory.
