Antwerp — from Jan Van Rijswijcklaan to Doornelei and Kardinaal Mercierlei

The route starts at the town mansion Ernest Nagels designed in 1935 for the industrialist Jan Van den Heuvel, at no. 4 Jan Van Rijswijcklaan, and passes along the Karel Oomsstraat, where Jan Vanhoenacker, John Van Beurden and Jos Smolderen designed the Van Linden-Verstraete building (1928). On the avenue follow a town house by the same architects (1928) and Raymond Ceurvorst’s Helsmoortel building (1923), at the corner of the Korte Lozanastraat, where Vincent Cols and Jules De Roeck designed six houses in 1931, three of them for themselves, between Art Deco and modernism. The route then reaches the Doornelei, then newly laid out: Benoit J. Dupont (1935) and Ferdinand Van Mierlo (1929) had buildings erected there on their own account, and Léon Heutz’s house (1927) was the first to be built in the street. Dupont also designed the two twin buildings on the Generaal Lemanstraat (1934). The route ends with Eduard Van Steenbergen’s Delagarde house (1927), with sculptures by Albert Poels, Edward Craeye’s Cammaert house (1928), in the protected urban site of the Kardinaal Mercierlei, and Jan Jacobs’s Van Loo house (1936).
