Art Deco apartment building erected for Joseph Mertens to a design by Benoit J. Dupont dated 1935 by a façade stone. According to the inventory, the "Résidence Conscience", with twelve flats, is representative of the architect's late interwar work, a moderately progressive architecture halfway between Art Deco and modernism. On a reinforced-concrete frame, the three-bay building has a basement and six storeys under a flat roof; the symmetrical façade is divided into a flat ground floor, upper storeys marked by stacked rectangular bay windows in the side bays, and a set-back top with a stepped crowning. It combines yellow Belvédère brick, white stone panels and bluestone; the porch with triple fanlight and the inscription "RESIDENCE CONSCIENCE", an Art Deco frieze with a stylised floral pattern and an articulated pilaster mark the central axis. The wrought-iron cellar grilles and entrance door, by the K. Sleeckx workshop of Deurne, survive; the building is recorded in the Flemish architectural heritage inventory.
