Antwerp
Antwerp-Berchem and Wilrijk — from Koninklijkelaan to Meerlenlaan
In Berchem, around the Koninklijkelaan, the route brings together Emiel Janssens’s Mathieu house (1929), whose occupants fled the German occupation in 1940 thanks to visas from Aristide de Sousa Mendes, the Thibaut house, one of René Cnoops’s first works (1927), the apartment building Louis Van Rijmenant designed and built on his own account (1925), Florent Vaes’s Résidence du Centenaire (1932), eight storeys high, and a multi-family house of 1929 whose plans were drawn up by the firm Gebroeders Vermeulen. On the Strijdhoflaan, Eduard Van Steenbergen’s own house (1925), protected as a monument since 1988, refers according to its inventory record to Dutch architecture and to Frank Lloyd Wright. The route ends in Wilrijk, with a multi-family house by Constant Wilbers (1935) and, on the Meerlenlaan, a house by Jean Alphonse Pots (1931), in a sober Art Deco with modernist features, and a villa by the brothers Hippoliet and Jules De Vos (1925).
