Paul Hamesse

Paul Hamesse, born in Ixelles on 7 April 1877 and died in Saint-Gilles on 22 February 1956, was an architect working in Brussels. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, he served his apprenticeship with Paul Hankar, then with Alban Chambon. In 1904 he remodelled the Hôtel Cohn-Donnay on Rue Royale. He joined his brothers Georges and Léon in the firm Paul Hamesse & Frères, whose works include the Pathé Palace cinema on Boulevard Anspach (1913). In the 1920s the firm designed Art Deco buildings in Ixelles and Forest: Rue Alphonse Renard 30-36 (1922), the house and workshop of the perfumer Jules Salomon at Rue du Zodiaque 13 (1925), and the apartment building at Avenue des Klauwaerts 37A-38 (1928). His archives are held by the Archives d'Architecture Moderne.
