Turnhout
Turnhout — from Gierledreef to Gasstraat, Art Deco and New Objectivity
This walk follows Art Deco and New Objectivity in Turnhout from 1930 to 1947. It starts at the warehouses and houses of the Derks & Hendrickx building firm on Gierledreef (1933), then follows de Merodelei, where Ern. Wauters signed the Verreet two-family dwelling (1932), Art Deco, and the Van Hoeck corner house (1935), “nieuwe zakelijkheid/art deco” according to the record. Next come A. Pastijn’s small house on Hannuitstraat (1933), with a curved oriel across its full width, and J.P. Verrees’s shop-house on Gasthuisstraat (1931), in which the record recognises the influence of the Amsterdam School. Three works by Eduard Van Steenbergen follow: the De Rode Hoed shop on Herentalsstraat (1930 and 1946-1947), then, on Deken Adamsstraat, the house of the joiner J. Hermans (1938-1939) and that of the doctor E. Van Ussel (1940), a protected monument. The walk ends on Gasstraat, at two mirror-image houses of 1935.
