The previous commercial building was completely destroyed by bombing during the First World War. Subject to a street-alignment order in 1923, it was only rebuilt in 1929, as recorded in the final acceptance report for the works. These were carried out by the Arras contractors Oscar Vandecasteele and Pichon to plans by the architect Julien Wirton. Built of partly exposed concrete with brick facing, the building is in a pared-down version of the Art Deco style, with a curved pediment, broad flat stepped setbacks and railings with waves and lozenges.
