The former Koloniale Hogeschool (Colonial University of Belgium) in Antwerp was designed in 1921 by Walter Van Kuyck and inaugurated by Albert I on 22 November 1923. Originally in a traditional, rural-inspired style, the main building was ravaged by fire in early 1929; its rebuilding by the Brussels architects B. Lamote and M. Blondeel, supervised by the city architect Emiel Van Averbeke, gave it its present Art Deco appearance: flat roofs, an attic of Euville stone, bronze domes over the square central tower and the wings, and a refitted interior. It reopened in May 1931. Its brick walls make functional and decorative use of natural stone, with a portico of Doric columns. The building, now building A of the University of Antwerp's Middelheim campus, stands in a garden and has been listed since 2011.
