Mechelen — from the Mona Lisa house to Paardenkerkhofstraat, Art Deco and New Objectivity

In Mechelen, this walk follows Art Deco and New Objectivity from 1928 to around 1935. It starts at the Mona Lisa house, a town house of around 1935 with stepped volumes and rounded forms, probably by J. Ottelohé. On Koolstraat, Jos Chabot’s corner café (1934) and houses (1935), between Art Deco and Nieuwe Zakelijkheid, are part of a protected townscape; on nearby Dageraadstraat stands L. Poplemon’s Villa des Glycines, from around 1935. On the Bruul, a commercial building whose permit application dates from 1928 has an Art Deco façade articulated by three red-brick pilaster strips. On the Veemarkt, two semi-detached town houses whose permit application dates from 1930 and whose designer is unknown precede the last stop, on Paardenkerkhofstraat: an Art Deco house of 1931 with a three-sided oriel.
