Group of a town house (no. 26) and an apartment house (no. 24) in a sober Art Deco style, built under the 1928 building application for H. Pauwels and Ch. Van de Werke; neither the file nor the plans mention the architect or contractor. Comparable, according to the inventory, to the architecture of Paul Smekens, these houses reflect the strong influence exerted in the 1920s by the Amsterdam School and by the Dutch architect Willem Marinus Dudok. Each of three unequal bays and three storeys under a flat roof, they form a continuous, almost symmetrical front in wine-red brick in cross bond, with natural stone for the ground floor, lintels, sills and window surrounds and bluestone for the plinth; the markedly horizontal façade is divided into ground floor, upper storeys and blind attic, punctuated by three-sided bay windows between narrow side windows in rising surrounds, beneath a broad overhanging wooden cornice. The steel window frames have been renewed after the original model with small glazing bars, as has the garage door, while the wrought-iron entrance doors with a lozenge and rosette pattern survive. The houses are recorded in the Flemish architectural heritage inventory.
