Pumping station of the municipal dry docks nos. 8 to 10, built by the City of Antwerp after a 1930 design in a matter-of-fact Art Deco style ("zakelijke art-decostijl") by the engineer Léon Smits of the port facilities department; the works, scheduled to take three months, were awarded in July 1930 to the Brussels contractor Société Anonyme d'Entreprises anciennement Dumon & Vander Vin. The dry docks, designed in 1925 by the engineer Charles Contamine, were completed in 1930-1931 on the west quay of the Kattendijkdok. The detached building, on the south quay of dry dock no. 8, combines two box-like single-storey volumes under flat roofs: the pump and engine hall, and a lower annex for the transformers, the high-voltage cabin and the office. Its reinforced-concrete frame is filled with red brick; the symmetrical north elevation opens with a tall register of windows grouped in threes, topped by low clerestory lights, and a continuous blind attic crowns both volumes. The interior keeps three centrifugal pumps of 6,600 cubic metres per hour and a 5-tonne hand-operated travelling crane. The building is recorded in the Flemish architectural heritage inventory.
