Apartment complex designed in 1938 by architect Maurice Fétu for the social housing company De Gezonde Werkmanswoning, on the site of the "de Zavelpoort" court of slum dwellings, as part of slum clearance; it was probably completed in 1940. Its three parallel five-storey blocks, separated by two small courtyards, combine social flats each with its own bathroom, a few more luxurious flats and shops with travertine-clad fronts, an exceptional programme for Flanders at the time. The sober façades in yellow-red brick with Dudok pointing are enlivened by vertical glazed stairwells, white rendered friezes and projecting trapezoidal or pentagonal balconies, in a streamlined Art Deco. The complex, renovated in 2012-2015, is recorded in the Flemish architectural heritage inventory.
