Albert Van Huffel’s design for the basilica was approved in 1921; his model won the grand prize for architecture at the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris. The apse was inaugurated in 1935, shortly after Van Huffel’s death, and his right-hand man Paul Rome completed the work: the great nave was finished in 1951 and the building handed over in 1970. On a reinforced-concrete frame faced with brick and terracotta, dentilled and zigzag cornices, geometric finials and ribs give the whole its Art Deco style; the sculptures are by George Minne and Harry Elstrom. The building is recorded in the statutory inventory.
