Maison bourgeoise Art déco, Nieuwstraat 8 — Tielt

An imposing town house whose Art Deco façade is signed and dated "Ch. Hoge / bouwkundige / Gent / 1926": that year the merchant Alberic Verbeke had an existing house, bought in 1913, remodelled. The three-storey rendered façade is decorated with reeded friezes, fluted pilasters with flattened Ionic capitals and panels; a three-sided oriel on the second level is crowned by a stylised iron railing in Art Deco style. In 1952 Raymond Verbeke had the house altered while keeping the Art Deco façade; the interior largely dates from that work.
