Built from 1934 on the site of the former fortifications, the Institut Diderot is the work of the architects Jacques Alleman and Chenal and belongs to the programme of public facilities championed by mayor Roger Salengro. It was inaugurated in 1938. Its highly rhythmic brick southern façade stretches 158 metres facing the jardin des Plantes, and a hall decorated with ceramics, light fittings and wrought-iron balustrades gives access to the interior. The school, now the Lycée César-Baggio, has been partially listed as a historic monument since 1997.
