The church of the Faubourg de Béthune was built from 1935 to 1937 by the Lille architect Jean Delrue to serve a working-class district that had grown up around the Thiriez spinning mill, and was inaugurated at the end of 1937. It is a vast Art Deco hall church of Dutch inspiration, built of brightly coloured bricks enhanced with ceramic tiles on a concrete frame. It opens through a wide lancet-shaped porch and is flanked by a massive bell tower.
