A blend of classicism and Art Deco, Charleroi town hall came out of an architectural competition launched in 1930. Jules Cézar won it and carried it out with Joseph André, who completed it alone: the structural work was finished in 1934 and the building was inaugurated on 18 October 1936. The facades, about 240 metres long, are in blue and white stone; three bronze doors open onto a marble-clad hall of honour. The decoration involved Marcel Rau, Hector Brognon, Oscar De Clerck, Alphonse Darville, Georges Wasterlain and Joseph Desmedt, and the festival hall can hold more than a thousand people. The building and its original furnishings have been listed since 2001 as exceptional heritage of Wallonia.
