Joseph André

Joseph André, born in Marbais (Villers-la-Ville) on 21 January 1885 and died in Charleroi on 21 January 1969, was an architect based in Charleroi. He trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels (1905-1908), then worked in Ernest Acker's office (1908-1910). He completed Charleroi Town Hall, inaugurated in 1936, whose 70-metre belfry is on the UNESCO World Heritage list: the competition had been won by Jules Cézar, with whom he carried out the project. He also designed the town hall in Marcinelle (1963). After the war his work included the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Charleroi (1955) and the Arthur Grumiaux Conservatoire (1964).
