The most recent belfry in Wallonia, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999, Charleroi's belfry is part of the town hall and rises to 70 metres. It stands on a 400 m² reinforced-concrete footing, with a hydraulic jack in each of its four supporting piers to adjust the plumb on undermined ground. It is built of blue stone at ground level, white stone on the upper floors, brick up to the carillon chamber, then white stone again, beneath a bronze spirelet. Its 47-bell carillon rings every quarter hour. Inaugurated in 1936 and Art Deco in spirit, it is part of Wallonia's exceptional immovable heritage.
