The "martyrs' monument" in Leuven, erected from 1923 to 1925 to honour the civilians shot in August 1914, follows the design of the architect A. De Bondt, winner of the 1921 competition. Its strict geometric lines and stylised ornament belong to Art Deco; it combines cast concrete and white stone in a 20-metre hexagonal obelisk on a triangular base. The sculpture is by Marcel Wolfers, son of Philippe Wolfers. The lost bas-reliefs were recreated in 2003-2004 by Gerard Thienpont; the monument has been listed since 1997.
