Unveiled on 28 September 1930 on the square between the Pilotage building (Loodswezen) and the Scheldt, this monument to seamen who died for Belgium is the work of the sculptor Simon Goossens, who won the competition organised by the city council. On the Scheldt side the bluestone base is shaped like a stylised ship's bow; at its centre stands a 9-metre pylon crowned with a red glass lantern, with bas-reliefs of a rudder and a telegraph. A three-metre bronze figure of a sailor stands on the Scheldt side, and the names of the dead of the Second World War were added later. The monument has been protected since 2007.
