Roubaix's municipal baths, commissioned in 1923 by mayor Jean Lebas, were built from 1927 to 1932 by the Lille architect Albert Baert. The plan, organised around a garden, draws on Cistercian abbeys, and the pool is lit by large polychrome glass roofs. The swimming pool closed in 1985 for safety reasons, and the building was then converted into a museum by Jean-Paul Philippon, opening in autumn 2001. It holds the Architecture contemporaine remarquable label (2000) but, according to the Mérimée entry, is not protected as a historic monument.
