Louis Rahier

Louis Rahier was an architect active in Liège between the wars; the sources consulted give neither his dates of birth and death nor his training. He was very present in the district around the Place des Nations-Unies, laid out after the 1905 World's Fair, where he built the apartment building at no. 6 on the square in 1932. On the Rue de Paris, which crosses the square, he designed nos. 6, 7, 8 and 10, with elaborate Art Deco wrought iron and original joinery sometimes set with stained glass, as well as no. 13 (1931) and no. 12, on the corner of the square (1939). On the Quai du Condroz he designed the building at no. 3 (1935), two bays wide and six storeys high, and signed the neighbouring house at no. 4, within an Art Deco ensemble mostly by Gabriel Debouny. From 1937 to 1939 he built, on the corner site at Quai de Rome 1 formerly occupied by the Paradis chapel, an eleven-storey reinforced-concrete Art Deco apartment building, marked at the corner by a trapezoidal oriel running its full height.
