Jef Huygh

Jef Huygh (Hendrik Jozef Huygh), born in Reet (Rumst) on 29 March 1885 and died in Deurne (Antwerp) on 4 December 1946, trained at the Antwerp Academy from 1902 and did a traineeship with the architect Ernest Dieltiens, with whom he went into partnership after the First World War. With the Dieltiens and Flor Van Reeth he built the Zuid-Australië garden suburb in Lier (1920), and in 1925 he exhibited in the Belgian pavilion of the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris. He taught at the Antwerp Academy from 1921 until his death and took part in the De Pelgrim movement. He worked independently from 1923, the year he designed his own house, the Lianahalle, on the Boekenberglei in Deurne. His work, located in the province of Antwerp, includes the Sint-Lievenscollege in Antwerp, with Flor Van Reeth, the Sint-Jozefskerk in Deurne (1933-1936) and the Sint-Laurentiuskerk in Antwerp (1932-1941). The corpus also includes the De Harp house in Antwerp, with Maurice Dieltiens, a house in Mechelen (c. 1925) and the Leysen house in Deurne (1935).
