Eduard Van Steenbergen

Eduard Van Steenbergen, born in Antwerp on 1 August 1889 and died in Berchem in 1952, was an Antwerp architect. He was based in Borgerhout, on Zegepraalstraat, from 1919 to 1925, then in Berchem, on Strijdhoflaan, from 1926 until his death. In 1928 he designed the Van den Berghe house at Wolfjagerslei 18 in Antwerp, a brick investment house in the New Objectivity style whose projecting bays, with their angular, broken lines, conceal the skew of the façade; he also designed its interior fittings and part of its furniture. His client, Victor Van den Berghe, director of Antwerp's municipal libraries, published the first monograph on him in 1955, describing him as "bouwmeester en binnenhuiskunstenaar" (architect and interior designer). In Turnhout, from 1930 onwards, he remodelled the Bauweraerts-Jespers house and clothing shop known as De Rode Hoed, for which he also designed the stained glass and the original furniture, and enlarged it in 1946-1947, doubling the shop and living quarters and creating the present shopfront. The façade, dominated by a full-width projecting bay clad in black faience, belongs to an ensemble that has survived almost intact.
