Built from 1905 to 1911 by the Austrian architect Josef Hoffmann for the financier Adolphe Stoclet, the palace is a masterpiece of the Vienna Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte, not an Art Deco building. Its geometric, pared-down volumes, revolutionary in the age of Art Nouveau, nevertheless lead it to be regarded as a forerunner of the style; the art historian Paul Dujardin sees in it the first true Art Deco building. Hoffmann designed a total work of art (Gesamtkunstwerk), with contributions from Gustav Klimt, Franz Metzner and Fernand Khnopff. The building was listed as a historic monument in 1976 (its furnishings in 2006) and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009 (no. 1298, criteria i and ii). It remains privately owned.
