A founding masterpiece of Belgian Art Deco, designed by Victor Horta for the Palais des Beaux-Arts at the initiative of mayor Adolphe Max and the music-loving banker Henry Le Bœuf. Horta set aside Art Nouveau for a geometric, monumental vocabulary. The building site (1923-1929) was a complex one: a sloping plot on the Coudenberg hill and the requirement not to block the view from the royal palace, which is why the building sinks into the ground. The complex brings together the Henry Le Bœuf concert hall, exhibition rooms and a cinema. It has been a listed monument since 1977.
