Victor Horta
Victor Horta, born in Ghent on 6 January 1861 and died in Brussels on 8 September 1947, was the great master of Belgian Art Nouveau. Caught in London by the war in 1915, he could not return to Belgium, went to give lectures in the United States and came back in 1919. The Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels (BOZAR) grew out of first plans drawn in 1919 and rejected by the State, then revived in 1922 and built from 1922 to 1928, in a more restrained, geometric style. He designed Brussels Central Station in 1912, largely underground, completed by Maxime Brunfaut between 1946 and 1952.
