Designed in 1928 by the architect Van Hoenacker and the sculptor War Van Asten, the First World War memorial was unveiled in July 1929. The inventory describes it as a true manifesto of Art Deco: in limestone, it rises like a ship's figurehead, an effect heightened by the bronze flagpole, on a base with canted corners, and consists of a monumental fluted shaft topped by a helmet resting on a wreath of laurel and oak. Two bas-reliefs signed by War Van Asten, depicting faith and loyalty, adorn the base, while the cross of sacrifice occupies the rear face of the shaft and two hands grip the flagpole, which bears the Belgian Lion.
