Built in 1926-1927 for the Compagnie du Nord under the direction of Raoul Dautry, Lens station is the work of Urbain Cassan. Its low, elongated profile, more than 80 metres long, evokes a locomotive and responds to the risk of mining subsidence thanks to a reinforced-concrete structure resting on eleven compartments fitted with hydraulic jacks. The decor includes a frieze of lozenges, grilles by Edgar Brandt and Cubist-style mosaics by Auguste Labouret on the themes of rail and coal. It was listed as a historic monument by decree of 28 December 1984.
