Town house in the centre of Bassevelde, opposite the church, built in 1935 by E. and L. Dhanens-Steyaert to replace the Steyaert family home, and later lived in by G. Dhanens, engineer and mayor of Bassevelde from 1927 to 1968. This Art Deco house belongs to a brick architecture that the inventory links to "romantic cubism": a strict façade of yellow-brown brick with deep horizontal joints on a bluestone plinth, projecting wooden eaves on three sides, a strong concrete band and a central round-arched door with a broad stone surround and geometric grille. On the upper floor, the cubism of the bay window is softened by the rounded adjoining balcony with an iron railing and small concrete canopy. The interior keeps its original layout and fittings — joinery, built-in furniture, tiling, parquet floors, ceilings, stained glass, a Belgian marble chimneypiece — which reflect a complete Art Deco design; the 1935 garage and the formal garden with a pond survive at the rear. The house and its garden have been protected as a monument since 2011.
