Antoine Pompe
Born in Brussels in 1873 and died there in 1980, Antoine Pompe trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and in Munich, and worked as a draughtsman for several architects, including Victor Horta. He began practising as an architect only at 35; his Dr Van Neck clinic (1910) is regarded as an early harbinger of modernism in Belgium. In the 1920s he built garden cities (La Roue, Kapelleveld) and houses such as the Maison Vandevelde in Ganshoren (1922). He committed to the modern movement before breaking with it in 1929.
